泉佐野・ふとん太鼓の英語解説

以下の英語翻訳は、2008年当時、『泉佐野市立図書館』のWebサイトに掲載されていた日本語解説資料を、外国人観光客向けに、英会話Giテックが、無償で英語に翻訳したものです。

2008年に、データは祭礼委員会にお渡ししたので、お祭りでは利用されていると思います。

Futon Drum(ふとん太鼓：Futon Daiko)

Futon Drum is a potable Mikoshi shaped like Futon. People carry it on their shoulders during Kasuga shrine’s summer festival in Izumisano. This festival is held the every year Saturday and Sunday before Marine day. The Futon Drum is carried all around Izumisano city on both days.

Node-cho, Kasuga-cho, shin-machi each have a Futon Drum which weigh about 1 ton each. They are carried around the stations and market streets in those towns.

The festival participants wear traditional clothing including old fashioned belts that hang down from their waist. They beat drums, keeping their rhythm by chanting outloud.

While carrying the drum, they shout out 「石山の秋の月　牡丹に唐獅子　竹に虎」（Akiyama no Aki no Tsuki Botan ni Karasisi Take ni Tora）

The young people carrying the drums sweat a lot because it is very hot and humid at this time of year.

Watching the Futon Durum procession as it makes its way toward the shrine shouldn’t be missed!

When they reach the Torii leading up to the shrine, procession’s leader turns on Futon Drum team and to see who is more powerful. They push each other is an exciting spectacle for the crowd.

The Futon Drum leaving the shrine signifies the beginning of the festival.

This was originally a fisher mens festival where they carried the drums to the fish markets and holy places by the sea on Awazi island in the early Maizi-period

This festival used to be held on July 24th when Japan used to use solar calendar.

After some smaller shrine merge together to form Kasuga shrine, this summer festival became an important festival in Izumisano. They wished for a safe and bountiful year of fishing.
